Key Stage 4
Art & Design is an optional subject, which results in a GCSE.
The WJEC GCSE in Art & Design has been designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design and developing the skills to express it. Students gain an understanding of past and contemporary art and design and be able to produce a personal response embracing a range of ideas. The skills developed will be varied. Students will develop a working knowledge of the materials, practises and technology of art and design, and use their skills to investigate, analyse and experiment within the field of art.
The GCSE is split into two parts:
Unit 1 is the Personal Portfolio. This will cover a range of work produced from activities, themes and projects set by the department. The portfolio is weighted at 60% of the course.
Unit 2 is the Externally Set Assignment, which lasts 10 hours and is weighted at 40% of the course. This is completed in March or April of Year 11.
All work is marked internally, with external verification of the marks awarded by the examination board. There is no formal written examination.
