The work of the Governing Body is split into five sub-committees that each deal with specific aspects of the school.
The committee reviews and commends HR policies to the full Governing Body for adoption. It receives reports from the Business Manager on staff resignations, retirements and appointments. The committee ensures the school is appropriately staffed to deliver the school’s planned curriculum to support student learning and welfare by reviewing the staffing structures of the school, monitoring performance management and ensuring the school has appropriate policies in place to support this.
Curriculum & Standards
The committee reviews the curriculum that the school offers, including Key Stage 3, core Key Stage 4 and the options we can offer to students. Members keep abreast of curriculum developments in order to keep the school’s offer current – such as the introduction of the Welsh Baccalaureate and new GCSE’s. It also reviews standards of Teaching & Learning across the school and challenges Senior Leaders on improvement.
Pupils & Wellbeing
The committee is responsible for oversight of inclusion and additional learning needs, provides a link to the Student Council and ensures the school has effective safeguarding procedures in place. It also looks after pupil wellbeing and discipline, and receives reports on pupil exclusions. Internally it reviews the school’s work with improving attendance and punctuality as well as progress made by vulnerable learners.
Finance and Estates
The committee monitors the school’s spend against the approved budget, approves budget amendments, reviews and agrees tender prices and monitors the school’s use of grant funds such as the Education Improvement Grant and the Pupil Deprivation Grant. The committee also reviews the use of the school buildings, plans maintenance schedules and publishes the school buildings development plan.
Ethos, Community & Strategic Direction
This committee works to develop the Catholic ethos of the school and to monitor the spiritual wellbeing of our students through our distinctive Christian character. This will include the monitoring of school worship, the delivery of the RE curriculum and building effective links with our parishes. The committee will also review the Section 50 inspection reports and monitor progress against recommendations made. The committee also looks after the community aspects of the school. It examines the school’s public image and reputation within the wider community, our relationships with feeder primaries, how we can effectively communicate with parents and the work of our Community Focused Schools and Community Engagement officers.
There are other sub-committees that are convened from time to time to deal with urgent matters. These committees are not planned and meet as required. They cover areas such as Pupil Admissions, Exclusions and Discipline committees.
